A large and characterful oil on canvas depicting clowns backstage at the circus.
Painted as an homage to Laura Knight and particularly her celebrated work, Clowns with a Prop Donkey, the composition centres around a group of costumed performers gathered beside a painted prop donkey, rendered in a vivid palette of saffron yellow, crimson red and powder blue. The exaggerated ruffs, theatrical poses and loosely handled brushwork give the piece a lively, slightly surreal quality, while the backdrop of circus drapery and backstage figures adds depth and atmosphere.
Oil on canvas, 69 × 80cm. Presented in a large carved Montparnasse frame sourced in France. Ready to hang.
Good overall condition, with light wear consistent with age.
Please be aware that all items in the collection are either vintage or second-hand and are offered as such. While we strive to emphasise significant flaws, please anticipate minor imperfections that are consistent with the age and prior use of each piece.
